Commission Vice Chairperson

Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia. Commissioner Jainaba Johm brings more than 20 years of legal experience to the NHRC Gambia. She is an experienced human rights lawyer with specialization in international law.

Commissioner Johm served national and international organisations including the United Nations and the European Union in various capacities, such as,

  • Legal Consultant to the Mano River Union in Freetown, Sierra Leone;
  • Legal Adviser and Consultant to the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies, Banjul;
  • Legal Consultant for the African Development Bank in Tunis;
  • Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression on the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights;
  • Commissioner and Vice Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights Banjul.

Her vast experience in human rights, among other expertise, makes her an asset in her role as the Vice Chairperson of the NHRC.
