NHRC Gambia has established the following departments to facilitate the smooth running of its operations;
Legal & Investigations
The Legal and Investigation Department is responsible for the implementation of the protective mandate of the Commission. The Department receives, investigates, advices and resolves complaints of human rights violations brought before the Commission.
It also undertakes research, advocacy and outreach activities to educate and popularize the establishment, functions and mandate of the Commission. The unit monitors prisons and other detention facilities to assess the conditions of inmates, as well as, evaluate the extent of compliance with international standards on the treatment of inmates.
The Finance Department is responsible for maintaining the accounting and financial reporting system of the Commission, ensuring that audited Financial Statements always show a true and fair view of the financial position of the NHRC. This includes ensuring that all financial transactions are properly and accurately recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and that proper supporting documentation is always available for reference.
The Department is in charge of planning, coordinating and controlling the Commission’s financial resources and managing the funds in line with approved budgets and ensuring that assets (including cash) are safeguarded as per internal control procedures.
Communications & Media
Communications is central to the work of the NHRC and is mainstreamed in all departments to ensure that the public is always informed and educated on human rights issues. The Communications and Media Department leads the promotional mandate of the Commission and helps to nurture a culture of respect for human rights in The Gambia. It does this through advocacy and sensitization, and creating, editing and presenting reports, newsletters and other publications using interpersonal, print and online platforms.
It is responsible for building and maintaining the image of the NHRC, creating an open channel between the NHRC and the public, and facilitating access to information on results, updates and findings of the Commission using various platforms including social media.
Human Resources
The Human Resources Department plays a leading role in talent acquisition and management which includes staff recruitment, training, performance and rewards management, employee-employer relations, as well as, ensuring compliance of the NHRC with labour laws of The Gambia. These are at the heart of a properly functioning organization. The unit also takes the lead in facilitating teamwork with a high sense of fairness, a positive work environment and constructive attitude, while maintaining strict confidentiality.
The Human Resources Department is also charged with the responsibility to put in place and administer a robust staff welfare scheme. This is very important because it keeps staff motivated and overall boost their performance.
Programmes & Resource Mobilisation
This Department takes the lead in planning and monitors programme implementation in line with the annual workplan. It also establishes and maintains strategic partnerships, explores and brings funding opportunities for the NHRC and ensures timely reporting to funding partners.
