Child Rights Monitoring Unit of the National HUman Rights Commission
The NHRC Child Rights Monitoring Unit (CRMU), is an initiative supported by UNICEF to strengthen child rights monitoring and accountability in The Gambia. It is a significant milestone in fulfilling The Gambia's obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and addressing the 2025 CRC Committee's recommendations for establishing independent monitoring mechanisms.
The Children's Act 2005 serves as the key legislation on child rights in The Gambia, domesticating the CRC and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC). Despite this legal framework, the absence of a comprehensive monitoring mechanism has limited the country's ability to systematically track the implementation of children’s rights and other commitments of the State and assess the impact of child rights policies and legislation.
