The Moot Court is a key activity of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to create a platform for university students across Africa to practice and improve both their written and oral advocacy skills in various fields of human rights.
In realization of its core objective of promoting and creating awareness and respect for human rights through human rights education and studies in The Gambia, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in partnership with the Faculty of Law of the University of The Gambia (UTG), launch the 7th Edition of the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Human Rights Moot Court Competition in The Gambia.
The Moot Court Competition is named after Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, former President of the Republic of The Gambia, in recognition of his efforts in laying the foundation of the African human rights system. At a time when the African continent was struggling with human rights violations, authoritarianism, and impunity.
Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara played a key role in the drafting of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights which today is the foundational document for the protection of human rights in the continent of Africa.
The competition will bring together human rights practitioners, law students, lawyers, parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and school children around human rights themes in Africa.
The theme for this year's competition is on 'Statelessness, Citizenship and Legal Identity in Africa'.
